With heavy hearts we join the world in mourning Dolly Parton, who passed away on August 25, 2026, in Nashville at the age of 80. For all of us who love Sonny James and the music of his era, the loss feels deeply personal. Dolly was more than a fellow star to Sonny — she was a friend, a kindred spirit and one of the artists he admired most.

Two Friends Who Shared a Dedicated Spirit of Entertainment

Their paths crossed again and again over the decades — on television soundstages, backstage at the Grand Ole Opry they both called home, and at the award shows and gatherings where country music’s family came together. Both had grown up in the rural South singing with family, and both carried that upbringing into every performance: a love of harmony, a deep respect for the song, and a genuine warmth toward everyone in the room.

Sonny recognized early that Dolly was something rare and special. He admired her voice, her gift for writing songs straight from the heart, and the authentic way she treated everyone with the same kindness. The admiration was mutual. When Sonny passed in February 2016, Dolly saluted him with the following released statement.

“Sonny James was one of country music’s greatest. He was a true gentleman and made some of the greatest country music records of all times, certainly some of my favorites.” — words that meant the world to Doris and so many loyal fans.

There are voices that entertain us, and there are voices that become part of our lives. Dolly’s was both.

A Spirit That Gave Back

As remarkable as her music was, Dolly may be remembered just as much for her generosity. Through the Dollywood Foundation and her Imagination Library, she placed hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children around the world, gifting each one with the same love of stories that shaped her own childhood in the Smoky Mountains. When wildfires devastated her East Tennessee home in 2016, she lifted up families through the My People Fund. Time and again she quietly gave to hospitals, research and neighbors in need — always with a smile and never looking for credit.

That kind of dedication was something Sonny valued above any chart position. He believed that the gifts you are given are meant to be shared, and Dolly lived that belief every single day.

She Will Be Deeply Missed

To everyone who was ever blessed to hear her sing, to every child who opened one of her books, and to every fan who felt a little braver because of her example: we share in your grief. Country music has lost one of its brightest lights, and the world has lost a true friend.

Rest in peace, Dolly. Thank you for the songs, the laughter and the love.
